The Beach Marauder

On this Labour Day weekend, if you happen to find yourself at one of New Brunswick's many beaches, be on the look out for this guy:

He is notorious for harassing beach-goers until they give him beach toys or food. Local police warn that he is still at large and that he can be volatile. If this beach menace approaches you, remain calm, smile kindly, say hello and then quickly hand over the goods.

 . . . tee hee.

My favourite time to be at the beach is after supper. The sun is beginning to set, the air is cooler, the water seems warmer and the mood is relaxed since everyone there is wrapping up their day. Last night, while Zoe was working, Avery was at his friend's camp and Mr. Level-Headed and Elliot were at Elliot's high school soccer try-out, I decided to take the two-under-two crew to the beach. We are so blessed to have a lovely beach just five minutes away from our home. We hop onto the ferry and there it is.

Carrying our supplies on my back and Harriet on my chest, while holding Leif's hand, I am sure we were quite the sight and probably momentarily struck fear in the hearts of many . . .

I really hope they do not set up camp beside us.

The other thing I love about the beach at night is that it is not very busy, so I placed our blanket by the water's edge and declared this spot ours. A kind woman who was coming out of the water as we settled in, commended me for bringing the babies to the beach all by myself. Then it hit me:

Oh. My. Land. I am ALONE!!! What was I thinking?!

See the thing is, I never think before I act. I just do and deal with the consequences as they arise. Typically, things work out for me, but every once and awhile a disaster ensues. And as I looked at my crazy toddler and the large body of water before us, I had a brief moment of doubt. Yep, this will be one of those disasters, but being an optimist and never a realist, I immediately squashed that fear and went about my business. I got Leif set up with all his beach toys and started a thrilling game of Hide-the-Dinosaur, while Harriet and I nestled up on the blanket for a little nursing sesh. Harriet is a firm believer in public displays of breastfeeding and loves to sample her mama's milk in different locales. It makes her feel rebellious:

Free the boobies!

This bliss lasted a whole five minutes before Leif decided to chase some sea gulls.

Yep! Most certainly a disaster.

I placed Harriet on our blanket and then took off after Leif who refused to heed any of my pleas for him to turn around and come back.Thankfully, the seagulls flew off and Leif decided our spot looked suddenly interesting once again. After we returned, though, things went surprisingly well. We all waded in the water, buried the dinosaur countless times and sat and enjoyed the cool, gentle breeze, while Leif, intermittently, pillaged neighbouring beach blankets for toys and snacks.

I knew we shouldn't have named him after a viking.

. . . tee hee.

Bye Bye, beach! Thanks for the shovel! Thanks for the crackers!
Happy long weekend, everyone!

My Weekend Full of Unexpected Events

Every Sunday afternoon, I sit down and plan for the upcoming week. My schedule is very detailed and includes meals, chores, a budget, who is going where and who is taking them. It may sound over-the-top, but it is the only way I can keep this ship afloat. Sure, there are always a few tweaks and changes, but for the most part, everything flows nicely once the schedule is in place. Then sometimes, for some unknown reason, the cosmos decides to throw me a couple of curve balls just to keep me on my toes and just to keep life interesting. And, oh, what an interesting weekend it turned out to be . . . tee hee!

On Friday, those of you who regularly read my blog will know, that I was giddy about spending an entire Friday evening and Saturday alone at home with just my hubby. I envisioned a relaxing and rejuvenating weekend, one that I desperately needed since craziness in the form of homeschooling and the arrival of Thing 4 is just around the corner for us (eeeek! Just 7 days till school starts). We had plans to bring supper in and to curl up on the couch to watch Anna Karenina. We were going to wake up early on Saturday morning, eat breakfast together and then peruse a local baby yard sale with my sister. We would then go in town, have lunch together and do a few errands before we returned home to wait for the return of our beloved munchkins. It was going to be heavenly, but . . . it never happened. Instead, this is what our weekend had in store for us:

It started Friday morning when I received an email from a friend that our boys' soccer team had secured a position in the play-offs. This was completely unexpected since the only way that could happen was if one particular team, who besides one tie this season had lost all their other games, beat a pretty tough team in the league. Well, as fate would have it they did beat them, which meant our soccer season was not finished. Although I knew this meant my Saturday plans would be changing, I could not help but feel happy for the boys. They worked very hard this season and an opportunity to play in the play-offs was a huge deal for them. As it just so happened, my boys had two of their friends from soccer spend the night at our house the evening before, which made for four times the celebration!

At 3pm, when their friends had been picked up by their mom, the boys and I began to pack for their next adventure, a night at another friend's camp. They were a little disappointed that since they were in the play-offs we would have to pick them up in the morning to make what we expected to be an afternoon game, but they quickly shook it off. We then jumped in the van and headed to the Superstore to meet the two brave dads who were going to chaperon this much anticipated "boys night" with six hooligan friends. As soon as I pulled up into the parking lot, Mr. Level-Headed called to tell me that our game was scheduled for 10 am in St. Stephen (an hour and a half away from our house).

WHAT?!?!?

This really threw a wrench in our plans. After lots of negotiating between parents and kids, we decided to pick the boys up at 10 pm that night. The boys and I were very disappointed to see our "plans" change, but that is life. I kissed them goodbye, warned them they better behave or else, and then I headed home to meet up with Mr. Level-Headed. Well, it turns out that Mr. Level-Headed had lots of unexpected appointments pop up that day and it looked like he would not be home until later. So, refusing to get down over something as stupid as a date night gone south, I decided to pick up some poutine at Reid's Point Pub and dine not alone, but with my favourite pooch, Scout.

By the way, Scout thinks Reid's Point Pub makes the best poutine ever!

Since we had to pick the boys up at 10pm, Mr. Level-Headed and I decided to go out to the movies instead because if we stayed home we would probably end up falling asleep on the couch and miss the pick up. As soon as he got home from his appointments, we dashed to the the theatre and made it just in time to see Elysium. What was I thinking with this movie? It was far too intense for me. I spent most of the time plugging my ears, holding my belly (to protect Thing 4) and closing my eyes tightly. Ugh! When it finally finished, I felt like I was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Note to self: do not watch sci-fi thrillers when I am suffering from pregnancy anxiety. The two do not mix!

Then we rushed out to pick up our boys. For the first time ever, we had a quiet drive home. The boys were exhausted and I was still suffering from shell-shock. When we arrived home, we all went straight to bed. Okay, one of us could not wait until we got home to fall sleep . . . awwwww!

The next morning I woke up early to pack for the soccer game. As I was packing, it occurred to me that we had an entire afternoon off and since we were going to be in the same neck of the woods as New River Beach and since Saturday was their annual sand sculpture contest, I wheeled and dealed with Mr. Level-Headed, who is not a fan of the beach, and came out the victor.

After a 5-2 win over St. Stephen (4 of which were scored by Elliot . . . the league's second top goal scorer . . .  woohoo!), we headed to the beach for a couple of hours. Mr. Level-Headed and Elliot spent most of the time resting on the blanket, while Avery and I  made several trips around to see the sculptures and dove in the frigid Bay of Fundy waters to collect sand dollars. At one point, we had 17 sand dollars in our hands, but since they were all still alive, we put them back. I have said it a thousand times before, but New River Beach is my favourite spot in the entire world!

At this point, I was really enjoying our spur-of-the-moment weekend, and so when we were discussing with the other parents of the youth who attended the conference in Quebec about who would pick the girls up later that day, I jumped on the opportunity. We were already out and about, our evening was clear, and I really wanted to hear all about Baby Girl's trip while she was still hopped up on the conference buzz.

So after New River Beach, we headed to Fredericton. Sure, we were all tired, sure my weekend budget had been, at this point, obliterated, but we were enjoying a carefree, beautiful summer Saturday all together. What more could we ask for?

Well, as much as I did not expect it, the afternoon got even better! As soon as we saw the bus pull into the chapel parking lot, I got out of the car and began walking towards it. Mr. Level-Headed warned me that Baby Girl would not think it was cool if the first person everyone saw as they walked down the stairs was her mom, but I just laughed him off and kept making a beeline for the bus. I missed my Baby Girl and I needed to see her. Much to my complete and utter shock, Baby Girl was just as excited to see me as I was her and she threw herself into my arms and squealed: "Mom!" as I squealed: "Girlie!". It was the best reunion ever! She had an awesome time in Quebec, and she even introduced me to a young a man that she may or may not have a little crush on, who just so happens to be a supreme cutie . . . tee hee!
The whole way home, Zoe, Hannah, and Min Ju laughed and shared stories about their trip (You can learn lots from listening to three teenage girls chat). There is nothing better for a mama than to see one of her children so happy and so excited. It really warmed my heart, and as we were driving home, I thought to myself:

Man, this has been one amazing summer!

On Sunday morning, I awoke feeling refreshed and eager to start our day. Although our weekend had completely derailed from the schedule, it turned out awesome and I could not have asked for a better weekend. Mr. Level-Headed was up and out early that morning because he had a church meeting to attend in Moncton. The kids and I got dressed, ate breakfast and still had a half an hour to spare before we had to leave for church. With the sun shining and an entire afternoon home with nothing but rest and relaxation with all my kiddos planned, I thought to myself:

This is the perfect end to a perfect weekend.

Then . . . .

Elliot started scratching his head. Not a little scratch, but a deep, long scratch. I froze. The last time he scratched like that was last fall when he had lice for the first time.

Elliot, why are you scratching?

My head is super itchy!

Ugh! Come here. Let me check your head in the sunlight.

And sure enough, I found one. Then two, and then some eggs.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

So, my relaxing Sunday turned into a day of vacuuming, laundry, changing bedding, checking heads, treating one head, and shaving two boys' heads.

Okay, so sometimes straying from the schedule can really suck . . . tee hee!

Wish me luck this week!

A Beautiful Fall Beach Day

Summer here in New Brunswick can be pretty icky with all the fog keeping everything cool and damp, but Autumn never disappoints with it's warm sunshine and brilliant colours.  As wonderful as Fall typically is, though, what we have enjoyed the past couple of days has been out-of-this-world amazing.  Holy heat, Batman!  With summer finally arriving, the boys and I took full advantage of such a beautiful afternoon and headed to the beach.  I must tell you, we got some pretty strange looks standing on the ferry with all of our beach gear in hand from our fellow ferry passengers.  Or were they looks of envy?

When we arrived at the beach, we were shocked to see that the only other beach dwellers that day were a sunbather, a reader, and this deer.

I don't know how this woman was able to keep her cool?  I would be freaking out if a deer insisted on hovering this close to me.

And he struck around for quite some time watching my boys swim and strolling the beach.

It was so bizarre!

But, eventually we grew tired of watching him, and the boys switched their attention to using their boogie boards as surf boards.

In spite of how cold the water was, the boys dove right in!

It's so strange to see all the fall colours in the background!

After the reader and the deer left, Elliot dried off and waged a secret seaweed attack on his unsuspecting brother in the water.  Muwahaha!

Eeeww!

Here is Elliot declaring himself Lord Supreme over Gondola Point Beach:

After which, he turned and told me this was the best Phys. Ed. class ever!

I think he may be getting hooked onto homeschooling as well.

tee hee!

These Are a Few of My Favourite Things

What are you going to miss most about summer?

At the moment, I am torn between Smores and the beach.

But, if you are like me and love nothing more than an ooey, gooey Smore, well I have the solution:

Smore Cookies!!

And they are to die for!  Just ask these three cookie monsters:

We're always picking up strays here at Shenanigans Inc . . . tee hee!
My friend, Mary, gave me the recipe, and it comes from the most delicious blog ever.  Check it out here for more fantabulous recipes.

Smore Cookie Recipe
1 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
Cream together butter and sugar until incorporated really well! You want it to look light brown and be smooth. I made mine in my mother in laws mixer and mixed for about 5 min on med.

Add:
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla
Beat thoroughly

Add:
2 cups flour (This is what the recipe calls for but I would add a little more. They seemed a little to wet to me).
½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup chocolate chips (semi sweet not milk chocolate), or one giant Hershey's bar, chopped or you can try something different like Reeses Pieces. Thats what my family likes to make smoores with. Oh and I added the whole bag of CC not just one cup. :):)
1 cup mini marshmallows
Stir to incorporate

The fun part about these cookies is that you actually bake the cookie on top of a whole graham cracker.

Bake at F350°, for no more than 11 minutes (after 11 minutes, the graham cracker begins to burn)

** My oven runs really hot, and Zoe discovered that we could only leave them in for 9 minutes.

I promise you will love them!

Now, if you are also like me and will be devastated once you can no longer lie on the beautiful beaches of New Brunswick and enjoy our chilly waters, you can always lie in a cold bath tub, throw sand on your bathroom floor, and reminisce over old beach photos.

Anyone up for some beach towel wrestling?

How about skipping rocks?

Perhaps a little beach volleyball?

A water fight is a must!

You could always try some sychronized pailing . . .

Or reanact one of your favourite movies:

Can you guess it?

tee hee!

So have no fear!  Even though summer is coming to an end, vacations are over, and plans are in the work for another school year, you always Shenanigans Inc. to help you make it feel like summer all the time.

The Big 5-0

I can't believe it, but this is my 50th blog post!

50!!!

Wow!  I must have matured this summer because that is two projects (my garden and my blog) that I haven't given up on.

Hmmm . . . I wonder what I can tackle next?

Anyhoo, for my 50th blog post I want to talk about one of my most favourite places in the entire world . . .

New River Beach!

Unfortunately, it takes about an hour for us to drive there, hence the high-fiving in the picture above.  But let me tell ya, it is so worth it. The long drive, the packing and every time I had to pull the car over to tell the boys "if you keep it up we are turning around", pale in comparison to how much fun we have here.  It's the best place on earth!

And I have been to other beaches.  Last summer we took the kids to Old Orchard Beach, which was very cool with its huge waves, its crowd of beach goers and, our favourite, its beachside carnival, but still it was no New River.

Last winter our family went on a cruise and we spent an afternoon at Magen's Bay in St. Thomas.  This was a beautiful beach!! The water was warm and crystal clear, the beach was surrounded by lush, green trees, and, my favourite part of the whole day, it was HOT!  But still, it was no New River.

Yikes!  Look past the awful "mom arms" and you will see the beautiful Magen's Bay in the background.

For those of you familiar with New River, you will know that the water is absolutely freezing, that the air temperature is usually a good 10' C below what it was at your house when you left, they charge you $8 just to park your car, and to top it all off there is the fog!  It could be bright and sunny your entire drive there, but the beach could be engulfed in a thick blanket of fog.  Going to New River Beach is always a gamble!

Ugh!  So, what's the attraction?

This is the beach I grew up on.

This is where my kids will grow up.

And this is where my friends hang out.

That's why I love it!

It's the memories and the people.

The other thing I love about New River Beach is that as you stand along the shoreline and watch the waves roll in one and after another, never taking a break, you feel small, very small.  All of your cares and worries seem insignificant standing before the majestic Atlantic Ocean, and I find comfort in this.

Yesterday was our first New River Beach day of the season, and like the other million and a half times I have been there, it was a fantabulous day!

We met up nine other families so that meant there was no shortage of friends for the boys to play with.

When we first arrived, Avery heard some little girls squealing over a crab they found, and he was very intrigued.  Like a vulture, he hovered around the area until they grew tired of examining the carcass, and he pounced in and captured it for himself.  He was so happy and wanted to keep the crab as a souvenir, but it stunk!  Oh, did it stink!  He couldn't come anywhere within a five meter radius of the blanket and you would smell it.  After trying to sneak past me and my super sniffer a hundred times, he eventually decided to bury the crab and mark the spot with an "X" so he could find it later.  But this did not happen.  Here is the other thing about New River Beach that is very cool . . . the tide is HUGE!  Even us seasoned beach dwellers, who should know better by now, participated in the "beach blanket shuffle" after underestimating just how high the tide would come in.

Here is the beach at 12 pm:

And here it is just three hours later:

Crazy!

Even though the water was frigid cold, this did not deter the under 16 crowd from playing in the surf and trying to catch a few waves.

Elliot seeking out some waves:

Waiting . . .

Waiting . . .

Caught one!

This is about as adventurous I got yesterday.

Before the tide came in, the sand was perfect for building sand castles and for digging your way to China:

Even though we had a lot of fun, our day at the beach was only near-perfect because Derrick and Zoe were unable to come with us.

Thankfully, I had this guy to comfort me.

When his mama wasn't looking, I let him do some exploring in the sand.

He seemed to enjoy the feel of it on his tootsies!

Oh, and I was nice, I did share him . . . a couple of times.

Like always, the best part about our trip to the beach was the snacking!

For all you scientists out there, perhaps you could do a study on why it is that we humans eat so much more when we are outside and why food seems to taste so much better when we are outside.  Hmmm  . . . any takers?
Last night, when Derrick asked Elliot what he did at the beach all day, Elliot replied: "I ate Twizzlers!" . . . tee hee!

So, there you have it, the best place on earth.  But, I warn you, it is not for the faint of heart.  A beach dweller here in Atlantic Canada must be strong to endure the frigid waters, must have an iron stomach to endure the stench of the wildlife, and must be able to pack away their weight in goodies.  Are you up for the challenge?

I promise you won't regret it . . .

Well, that is as long as the fog doesn't roll in . . .

Tee hee!
